Description
View looking east, from the Glass Skywalk at the Cabo Girão Cliffs, on Madeira.
Facing East, over a near vertical drop of 500m.
Madeira is an island in the Atlantic, north of the Canary Islands, but still closer to Africa than mainland Europe. It was formed by volcanic activity and has dramatic cliffs which erode very slowly.
The viewing platform from where this was taken, the glass Skywalk, juts out from the Cabo Girão cliffs on the south coast, over a 500m drop which you can see under your feet. This is the view looking east. To the right, to the south, is just open sea, right down to Antarctica.
